HR compliance FAQs
It generally covers your handbook and policies, employee files, hiring paperwork like Form I-9, pay practices, required postings and leave. It comes after I've learned how your business runs, and it ends with a conversation and a short, practical ranked list of what's working, what's missing and what to fix first, sized to your headcount.
I suggest at least once a year, and whenever a law changes or your business does, like a new location or a headcount milestone. Colorado's minimum wage under the COMPS Order, for example, is updated every year. An employee handbook review often means a few targeted updates, not a rewrite.
Several Colorado laws generally apply from your first employee: HFWA paid sick leave, FAMLI, EPEWA pay transparency, the COMPS Order and workers' comp insurance. Colorado's anti-discrimination law also generally applies to Colorado employers, not just larger ones. Beyond that, it depends on your headcount and industry.
It depends on the law and how headcount is counted, but Title VII and the ADA generally apply at 15 employees, the ADEA and COBRA at 20, and FMLA at 50. Form I-9 applies from your first hire, and the Equal Pay Act covers virtually all employers.
Often both, and you don't have to choose alone. I'm not a lawyer. As your HR compliance consultant, I build the policies, handbook and everyday practices that keep you compliant. When something needs legal advice or a claim comes in, I bring in an employment attorney and work with them on your behalf. I'm beside you the whole way, and often the go-between.
It depends on your headcount, how many locations or states you're in, what's already in place and how deep the audit goes. You can work with me three ways: Project-based, Hourly, or a Monthly partnership if you want steady support after the audit. A consultation gets you a quote based on what you actually need.
Hourly help is from $115/hr, depending on the type of work. A monthly partnership starts around $1,950/mo and scales with the support you need. Project work is scoped individually and quoted up front, so you know the investment before I start. Most handbook projects start around $900; a full rebuild costs more than an update. The first consultation is free.
